Having a special natural potential as
wonderful mountain landscapes, meadows with flowers, century-old forests,
ice lakes, narrow paths, quays, caves, clear rivers and valuable historic
and artistically treasures, the Oltenia is an attractive tourist zone in Romania.
The forest with their rich and varied
fauna as well as the hydrographic network rich in fish are interesting for
sportive hunters and fishers. In the
natural reservations situated in the Cozia, Buila, Vanturita and Capatana Mountains
are protected, as monuments of nature, some species of Romania's
flora and fauna.
The tourists are impressed by the
wonderful landscapes of the karstic relief and interesting geological structures:
Baia de Fier is known thanks to Pestera
Muierii (Woman’s Cave), a cave
situated in the quays of the Galbenu
River (Yellow
River).
To the North 31 km far from Drobeta-Turnu
Severin there is the mountain of Ciresu where there is the Topolnita
Cave, one of the biggest and most
interesting caves in Romania
with its over 11 explored kilometers.
At 70 km North far from the town of Baia
de Arama (a former copper mine in Antiquity) is a junction to the Cerna
Valley and to the natural bridge from
Ponoarele (a huge vault 60 m long formed after the crumbling of a cave) and
to the lilac forest with a surface of 20 ha where it is organized a traditional
feast every May.
A port of the Danube, Orsova has a modem nautic
base both for performers and for
leisure, being the start point of the trips by boat on the Danube to the known wonderful zone of
"Cazane". The Dealul Mosului where there is the Sf. Ana Monastery
watches over the town and opens a magic view to the Cerna Bay
and the Portile de Fier Dam.
One of the most valuable attraction is
undoubtedly the sculptural complex (in Targu Jiu) made by great Brancusi in
1937-1938: Table of Silence, Gate of Kiss and Endless Column. The three
masterpieces gathered in an open-air place are dedicated to the heroes of
the I WW.
A reason to visit this province is its history
and vestiges. Archaeological, the man
lived since the Paleolithic (Schela Cladovei). The Romans' arrival in the
Balkan Peninsula, their wars with the Dacian Kingdom, the colonization
of Dacia and the birth of the Romanian people are proved by important
vestiges: the ruins of the Trajan's Bridge, Drobeta Roman camp, or Roman
Thermae. Also there are Geto-Dacian and Dacian Roman camps and fortresses
from Buridava or Calea lui Traian on the Olt Valley.
The tourist network of this province
consists as well in cultural and architectural monuments, much of them being unique ones as the
monasteries of Cozia, Horezu, Govora, Bistrita, Dintr-un Lemn, Surpatele,
Lainici, Arnota as well as the Episcopal Palace of Ramnic.
The picturesque regions and the curing
waters contributed to the development of the tourism
here. The table waters from Calimanesti-Caciulata, Baile Govora and Baile
Olanesti are miraculous in the cure of a lot of diseases.
Thanks to the landscape, architecture,
folk customs and peoples' hospitality, Oltenia is a wonderful hostess for
its tourists.
